Pangasius prices soaring to record high – Feb 2022

According to traders, it is likely that the price of raw pangasius will soon exceed the mark of 30,000 VND/kg. The reason is that at this time, the export demand is high while the supply is low.
Since the fourth quarter of 2021, pangasius demand in the Chinese market has increased sharply because the Government announced the relaxation of imported goods supervision. In the coming time, China’s pangasius demand will more and more increase when their pangasius reserve for the summer of 2022 is exhausted.
Besides, at the moment, the US market is in high demand for pangasius. Now, people accept and adapt to living alongside Covid-19, the US economy has gradually recovered and HORECA (Hotel – Restaurant – Catering/Cafe) also has returned to operate. Therefore, the seafood consumption demand has significantly increased. Raw pangasius size under 1kg is collected and exported at very high prices.
In the last time, pangasius enterprises have faced more difficulties due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Factories had to reduce capacity to prevent the risk of Covid-19 infection, even others had to shut down and farming, fishing, transportation, business, import-export activities all faced obstacles.

The leader of the Vietnam Pangasius Association (VINAPA) said that 2 years of being affected by Covid-19 caused farmers to lose money. Therefore, they were hesitant to continue stocking new crops, which affected the number of raw materials for the market.
The lack of supply has pushed up the price of pangasius seed, even though farmers accept the high price, it is not easy to buy fish seed.
In the context of pangasius demand more and more increase, pangasius prices will soar to a record high in the second quarter of 2022. Currently, disease control in Vietnam has many positive changes, farmers have started stocking new crops, production and export activities have also recovered strongly. It is predicted that the price of raw pangasius will gradually tranquil in the third and fourth quarters of 2022 when the supply of pangasius recovers.
